Dancing Through The Days

A single mom from a difficult childhood, Stephen’s mother braved so much in her young life and gave her two children more love and support than she herself had ever been shown. To show how grateful he is for everything, Stephen gave her this custom song for Christmas that celebrated her life and her love.

“My mom’s parents didn’t give her an example of how to raise children. She and her siblings were moved around so much and lived in tough conditions for the majority of their childhood. Her fondest Christmas memory was being adopted by a local fraternity, a group of boys who were so young and who would never know the impact they would have on the rest of her life.

When I was born, she was scared, all alone and so young, but she promised me that she would show me more love and kindness than she had ever known. She was determined that I would grow up confident, loving and kind, and that the world would be mine for the taking.

When my sister was born, my mom realized just how big her heart truly was when she found she could love someone else just as much as she loved her baby boy. That day showed just how endless her love really is.

She raised us as a single mom with no help from anyone. Her parents didn’t give her a roadmap to bring up children, so she decided to give us what she didn’t have – every day we would know that we were important and that we would have the confidence to be the best people we could be.

She always wanted to be a dancer, but her parents couldn’t give her lessons, so she made sure that every day of our lives were filled with dancing, laughter and love. She was a young mom. My favorite memories are of us dancing in the basement to “Solid Gold,” family movie days at the matinee to see Benji, and taking me to see my first concert.

As we grew older, she was always in the front row for every concert, every play, every speech, every award, with tears of joy in her eyes as we succeeded. When we became fully grown, we saw those same tears of happiness as she gave thanks for the type of people we have become. She always says that the greatest gift she’s ever received was having two kids who are kind, loving and accepting of the good in the world.

I want to give my mom a song for Christmas that makes her know how thankful I am for her and how much she means to me.”

Thank you for sharing my brother’s words about our amazing mother. She is the strongest, most giving person I know. We laugh constantly, except as we sob our way through this beautiful song.
