Finding Love Off The Blue Line

From the shores of Lake Michigan to the beaches of the West Coast, Christopher and Mary Ann have shared so many happy adventures together. For their anniversary, he got her a personalized song made from scratch just for her to tell their special love story through a medium they’ve always connected: music.

“We met in Chicago, at the Blue Line Lounge and Grill.

Within four months, we were standing along the Pacific Ocean, cutting our day trip short to spend most of the day on Laguna Beach, in the shadow of Hotel Laguna, where we were married little more than two years later.

During our wedding, we snuck out to the balcony and listened to “California Stars” by Wilco and Billy Bragg. We spent our honeymoon in southern France and northwest Italy after some grueling days in London and Paris. We love Calistoga, which is the northernmost city in Napa Valley, away from the inauthentic and into the authentic. That’s us, I guess. Authentically ourselves.

The funny thing is, as much as we love experiences like that, we are happy with much less. The Travelodge in Laguna Beach is where we stayed; the same went for San Diego, where we found a home at the Pacific View Inn but reveled along the campfire at the La Jolla Beach.

Each year we went back to San Diego and Southern California, the inspiration for being married at Hotel Laguna, and listened to “California Stars” off of Mermaid Avenue.

All the same, we were Chicago through and through. She grew up here; my family had roots here. I moved down to Chicago to be closer to my family and found my own. We lived through championships and disappointments.

We lived all over the city. She moves slower than I do (her nickname is Turtle). But we ended up in the same place. First in Logan Square, then in the South Loop. Then, we found out that our son was on the way, so we found moved west to Glen Ellyn, a quaint Chicago suburb. Our daughter followed not long after.

My wife made an adventure of it all. We would later find our own West Coast along the shores of Lake Michigan. For as many adventures as we have, we establish ourselves there, largely thanks to her sense of joy in every moment we spend together.

She makes me laugh and, when life wears on me, makes it a point to force me to as well, even if it means an overnight trip to Milwaukee to see a show. We have slowed down, enjoying the arboretum and zoos as much as most other things.

Of course, she is less willing to take risks and far less reckless than I am. Yet, despite her trepidation, she is always willing to trust. Sometimes she’s right and sometimes I am. And that is alright with us.”
