Artist Spotlight: Alyssa Newton

This month, we had the privilege of chatting with Alyssa Newton, a rising star in the music scene and one of our favorite new additions to the community. Join us as we learn how she got her start in music, her musical accomplishments and a whole lot more. Let’s dive in!

Thank you for taking some time to chat with us! Let’s start things off with a little background. Tell us a little about yourself and how music became a part of your life.

Thanks for making me your featured artist of the month! It’s an honor. Music has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. I grew up singing in church every Sunday and my parents did, too. My mom is a big music fan – she always had albums playing in the house while we did our chores. It made the work more fun, that’s for sure. Those Faith Hill and Shania Twain albums she’d put on are nostalgic to me to this day because of those special early memories.

We’re really excited to be working with you and we know our customers have loved every song you’ve made thus far. Since starting with us a few months ago, what has been your favorite part so far about writing for Songfinch?

I’ve really loved getting to craft people’s unique stories into songs that they’re using to honor someone who means so much to them. To me, this is one of the most special ways to use music – as an avenue to express genuine love and appreciation for someone else. It’s a privilege to help other people do that.

With all that is going on in the world, how have you adapted to the music industry? What are you doing to remain connected with your fans and win over new ones?

I’ve been co-writing and co-producing music with other people over Zoom a whole lot! It’s pretty incredible how much we’re able to accomplish remotely these days. We’ll write a song over Zoom and then I’ll record my vocal parts and email them to whoever produces the recording. So many great songs have come out of this unexpected platform. In these times, social media like Instagram, Tik Tok, and Facebook have been the best ways for me to stay connected to everyone who’s following my musical journey.

You were recently featured on the 2nd season of NBC’s latest hit show, “Songland”. How did you manage to score that opportunity? What was the experience like and what did you learn from it?

My opportunity to go on Songland came through a company in Nashville I’ve been collaborating with. They had some connections to the show and sent in my song, “Made For Something”. In less than a week, I was on a plane out to LA to film the Bebe Rexha episode! It was a whirlwind. I learned that (1) TV shows take a lot of manpower – so many people you never see onscreen are there day in and day out to make it happen. I’m very thankful for them. AND (2) The producers on the show encouraged me in the talent they saw I brought to stage. It was a sweet affirmation to continue chasing my dream and to keep trusting my musical intuitions moving forward 🙂

The release of your song “Made For Something” generated the most streams you’ve had for a single thus far. What has the feedback been around that song?

Yes, that’s been exciting! I think especially in this unprecedented time in the world, people are being encouraged with messages of purpose. To me, this song is bigger than an empowerment anthem; it’s a reminder that we’re all here on earth for a reason. And no matter what craziness surrounds us, our time here is not over yet. I hope people feel a renewed sense of inspiration to continue living and treating other people with kindness & genuine love 🙂

If you could collaborate with any songwriter, producer or artist, who would it be and why?

Taylor Swift… for sure! She was my biggest musical inspiration as a teenager and I honestly don’t know if I’d be living in Nashville today if it weren’t for her story. She’s undoubtedly one of the greatest & most prolific artists of our generation.

Who are some of your favorite artists right now? Who should we be adding to our playlists?

I’ve been jamming to T-Swift’s “folklore” (like many, I assume), along with Harry Styles’ latest record “Fine Line”, and Colbie Caillat’s new country band called Gone West. All are really great vibes!

What are some key pieces of advice you would give to aspiring musicians?

Collaborate with other people because it makes you better and it’s more fun! And at the same time, don’t compare yourself too much to others. You are unique and so are your gifts. Work to become the best version of yourself and that will always be enough.

Is there anything else you would like our readers to know?

I have a new single called “Listen” coming out on all streaming platforms in October. Be on the lookout for it and check out the music that’s already available – all under my name Alyssa Newton on Spotify, Apple Music, and other streaming services.

My husband was overwhelmed with tears of joy and emotion when I played this for him. He had no idea what I had done and what was going on for the first verse then caught on and his jaw dropped. Such a cool gift and you did an amazing job capturing all of my notes and the essence of our relationship. Thank you so much!!! P.S. We are avid songland watchers so when we saw you on the show, we loved you! Very cool that Songfinch allowed you to write us a personalized song.
