Story To Tell

Susan and her husband share a fairytale marriage replete with children, a large Italian family, and a close friendship that has only grown over time. For his birthday, Susan gave her husband a song that is as timeless as their love.

“We are both doctors. He does anesthesia and I am a plastic surgeon. As he did anesthesia for a lot of my cases, we met at work. He was always fun and had a good story to tell — he is Italian and it is ALL about having a good story to tell!

One day as I was working, he looked over the drape that separated us and told me of this dream he had about me. It was at that moment I knew he was going to ask me out and I was so surprised. He called me that night and asked me on a date.

We went to a nice restaurant, Sullivan’s, and for a walk on the river. We finished at his house with wine. It was a wonderful evening.

We started dating but had to keep it quiet at work so no one would know. We went on a trip to New York for a weekend and had the best time ever. Seeing plays, going to Little Italy, eating at great restaurants and walking all over.

People started seeing us out on dates, so they finally knew. We started planning on moving in together and then bought a house together. We had both been through bad relationships, so we were not sure about getting married. One night I vaguely remember waking up as he was playing with my finger, and I never thought twice about it.

Then one snowy December night, he insisted we go to dinner at this local Italian place, Greco’s. It seemed crazy to go out in such bad weather. But we went, and after ordering he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. He got the most beautiful ring for me and had picked it out all by himself. He got it from the jeweler that day and couldn’t wait to give it to me. These two ladies at the table next to us squealed as they saw him get down on one knee. Of course I said yes, and the ring was tight! So he used a little butter to get it on my finger. He had tried to measure my ring size while I was asleep! It fit perfectly! When we got home his parents were there with champagne as he had already told them.

We had a beautiful wedding at the Drake. All our bridesmaids and groomsmen were little nieces and nephews (big Italian family)! So fun, but at the reception dinner, we ended up being the babysitters basically, as we had all kids at the head table, so we cut their meat and helped with whatever they needed while the parents of these kids enjoyed a quiet meal!! We didn’t think about that part! We danced late into the night and had a blast.

We have been blessed to be able to travel to Italy every year since we have been together. We love Venice, Rome, the Amalfi coast and our favorite is Capri. On our first trip, his Aunt Livia called us every morning at 7 am to tell us to get up and go enjoy whatever was at that location to see!

We have kids and still live in the same house. He is a great husband, father and is the life of the party. He is spontaneous and known as the fun one! He always has a great story to tell, and that is what initially caught my attention!”
