To The Moon And Back

From teacher, to coworker, to cherished companion, Brooke wanted to show Mama H how much she appreciated and respected the many wise lessons that helped remedy personal struggles and adversity. With this song, Brooke commended Mama H for years of friendship and told her one more time, “I love you to the moon and back.”

“Mama H has helped me through so much in my life. She helped me with real estate by showing me how to look at homes, doing final walk throughs, and ultimately giving me the courage to buy my own house.  With the skills she taught me, I was able to buy a new car and find a new job. Mama H also helped me with personal issues with friends, issues with boyfriends and more.

We laugh together a lot and have created so many memories together. I’ve known Mrs. Handley since I was four years old and she worked at my elementary school. I reconnected with her in high school when I aided for her and took an entire semester to learn the Single Ladies dance. My friend and I would make videos for her when we were in college every so often to let her know how we were doing and how much we missed her.

I eventually began working with her when I became a teacher. She was instantly my go-to with anything. She was 20 steps down the hall from me and we always joked that the most use I got out of my school phone was to call her many times throughout the day.

She pushed me to pursue a new job when she could see that my old one was causing me stress. It was a hard transition for me as I left all of my work friends and a familiar place, but she helped me ease into my new school as well. We talk constantly, sharing stories and inside jokes. We can give each other a look and know what the other is thinking. We can say one word and start bursting out with laughter. We have secret codes. When we have no idea what’s going on, it’s a simply “Key Go Trot,” our shortened version of “Whiskey Tango Foxtrot,” which to us, means WTF. Her laughter, to me, is contagious. There are too many jokes and inside stories between us. Even if she’s laughing AT me, I can’t help but laugh too. She’s my favorite person to laugh with.

We go shopping together. We sit on the couch late at night together, laughing and talking and watching TV. We go on adventures together – to Sonic, to Indiana Beach, to the mall.

But most importantly, when I’ve been recently diagnosed with mental health issues, she has been my go to when I’m upset or anxious; she has stayed on the phone with me until I’ve calmed down, even if it takes an hour, has been the one in and out of hospitals with me, has gone to doctor’s appointments with me, and she has always let me know that she loves me and I will always be loved. She means the world to me, and I just want to let her know it. Our nightly routine of good nights and love yous help me fall asleep a bit better. “I love you to the moon and back Mama H. Thanks for loving me.” “Love you bunches, Sunshine. Always.””
